Nanga
Parbat (‘Naked Mountain’) is not a single peak but an
immense massif with a series of successive ridges and tops culminating in
an ice crest and the summit at 8125m. It is the ninth highest mountain in
the world and Pakistan’s second summit after K2. Its southern wall,
the Rupal
face is one of the great precipices in the world with a drop of 5000m. Known
also as the ‘Killer Mountain’ it has a fearsome
reputation for mountaineering difficulty and bad luck. In particular there
were some dreadful disasters on a number of pre-war German expeditions and
by 1937, thirty
climbers and porters had already died on the mountain. It was dramatically
climbed by Herman Buhl in 1953 in an astonishing 41 hour solo epic on a joint
Austro-German expedition.
